The best bowl of udon you will ever have.

My favorite place for udon is Marukame Udon in Honolulu. It’s a small hole in the wall that attracts many people from all over the world. Because it’s so popular, you have to stand in line before you get into the restaurant. But don’t worry, the line goes by pretty quick.

Once you have your meal, you pay the cashier, find a table and get ready to enjoy the best bowl of udon you will ever have!

It is set up like a cafeteria. The first thing you see when you enter are the udon noodles being freshly prepared. There’s a machine that flattens and cuts the dough. Then they cook the fresh noodles in a large vat of boiling water. When the noodles are perfectly cooked, the workers pull it out of the hot water and rinse it in cold water to stop it from cooking further. Then they curl the noodles into bunches by hand so that everyone gets the same amount of noodles.

There are only a few ways in which the udon noodle bowls come. You can have in the traditional broth or a curry broth. Then you can customize your bowl by adding different toppings. Some of my favorite toppings are the tempura crumbs, a onion and beef stir fry and a cracked egg on top.

Next in the line you get to choose from a pretty big selection of different types of tempura to have with your udon. You can also choose different types of musubis ranging from the well-known SPAM musubi to salmon musubis. Once you have your meal, you pay the cashier, find a table and get ready to enjoy the best bowl of udon you will ever have!


One of my favorite ways to get to Marukame Udon is through the International Marketplace. It’s a nice fun walk through the open air shopping mall that has a lot of nice stores. I also like to stop off at one of the ice cream shops in the International Marketplace for dessert after my udon. I highly recommend that you go here for everything udon!
